Installing and Updating Fleuron

This article covers installing the Fleuron beta on a Mac, getting past the warning macOS shows the first time, and moving to a newer test build. Fleuron is in beta testing: the Mac version is being tested now, and Windows and Linux versions are coming soon.

What you need

  • A Mac with macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later.
  • Either kind of Mac: the test download works on Macs with Apple silicon and on Intel Macs.

Installing Fleuron

Test builds come as a download file whose name ends in universal.dmg.

  1. Double-click the .dmg file you downloaded.
  2. In the window that opens, drag Fleuron into Applications.
  3. Open Fleuron from your Applications folder.

Opening Fleuron the first time

The test builds aren't signed with an Apple developer certificate yet, so the first time you open Fleuron, macOS says it can't check the developer and won't open it. You only need to do this once:

  1. Try to open Fleuron, and close the message macOS shows.
  2. Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down. Next to the line about Fleuron, click Open Anyway.
  4. Confirm, and Fleuron opens.

After that, Fleuron opens like any other app.

Note: Once Fleuron is installed, double-clicking a Fleuron book file (.fleuron) in Finder opens it in Fleuron.

Updating to a newer test build

Fleuron doesn't update itself yet. When a new test build is ready, you download it and replace the old app.

  1. Save any open books with File ▸ Save (⌘S), then quit Fleuron with Fleuron ▸ Quit Fleuron (⌘Q). Fleuron saves your books before it quits.
  2. Open the new .dmg and drag Fleuron into Applications. When the Mac asks, choose to replace the old copy.
  3. Open Fleuron again. If macOS shows its warning again, follow the steps in Opening Fleuron the first time.

Your book files (.fleuron) are separate from the app, so replacing the app doesn't touch them.

Tip: Not sure where your books are? Open one and choose File ▸ Show in Finder. See Saving, Files and Backups.
